FASTag on a Used Car: What Buyers and Sellers in Delhi NCR Must Do

A FASTag can't be transferred with a used car. What the seller must close, how the buyer gets a new tag, and why the annual pass stays behind.

Most used car deals in Delhi NCR end with the keys, the RC papers and a FASTag sticker still on the windscreen. That sticker is the part buyers and sellers forget. A FASTag cannot be transferred with the car. It stays linked to the seller's bank account or wallet until it is closed, and the buyer needs a tag of their own. If you are buying from used cars in Delhi NCR or selling your car, here is what each side must do.

Why the Old FASTag Can't Stay

A FASTag is issued against a vehicle's registration number but paid from the owner's account. When the car changes hands, the tag on the windscreen still draws from the seller's money. Every toll the new owner crosses can be charged to the seller until the tag is closed, as Acko Drive explains.

The buyer cannot simply take it over either. Ownership of a FASTag cannot be changed. The seller has to close the account, and the buyer then applies for a fresh tag in their own name.

One Vehicle, One FASTag

Since April 2024, NHAI's One Vehicle One FASTag rule has allowed only one active tag per vehicle. When a vehicle has more than one tag, all except the latest are deactivated. That is why the old tag needs to be closed properly rather than just peeled off. Until it is, the buyer may also find that the new tag does not work smoothly, and may not receive SMS alerts for it.

What the Seller Should Do

Close the FASTag before or at handover. Log in to the issuing bank's app or wallet, raise a closure request, or call the issuer and ask for the tag to be closed. Keep the confirmation message or reference number, and share a screenshot with the buyer. Then remove the sticker from the windscreen and tear it, so it cannot be reused.

If you have money left in the FASTag wallet, ask the issuer how the balance will be refunded. And if you are selling, our guide on selling without getting lowballed covers the rest of the deal, or you can sell your car on Hooter.

What the Buyer Should Do

Ask the seller for proof that the old tag is closed, and check that the sticker has been removed. Then apply for a new FASTag in your own name through a bank, payments app or other authorised issuer. You will usually need the RC, your identity proof and address proof.

Because the RC needs to show your name, the new tag usually follows the ownership transfer. Our ownership transfer guide for Delhi NCR explains that process. If you buy a car registered in another state, read how to buy a car with HR or UP plates too.

There is one piece of good news. From 1 February 2026, NHAI stopped asking for a separate Know Your Vehicle (KYV) check on new car FASTags. Verification is done before the tag is activated, and KYV is now needed only if a complaint is received.

Driving Before Your New Tag Arrives

Until your own FASTag is active, toll plazas on national highways treat the car as having no valid tag. Since 15 November 2025, that means paying twice the normal toll in cash, or 1.25 times the toll if you pay by UPI. That adds up quickly if you use NCR's expressways every day, so get the new tag sorted as soon as the RC is in your name.

The Annual Pass Stays With the Seller

NHAI's FASTag annual pass lets private cars, jeeps and vans make 200 toll crossings or use it for a year, whichever comes first, on national highways and national expressways. It launched on 15 August 2025 at ₹3,000, and the fee for 2026-27 is ₹3,075. It does not cover state highways or state-run expressways.

The pass is non-transferable and stays tied to the vehicle and FASTag it was bought for. So if the seller bought one, it does not pass to you with the car. Once your own FASTag is active, you can buy a new pass if you drive enough on national highways to make it worth it.

A FASTag Checklist for Used Car Deals

Seller: close the FASTag with the issuer, keep the closure confirmation, remove and destroy the sticker, and ask about any wallet refund. Buyer: get proof of closure, complete the RC transfer, apply for a new tag in your name, and buy an annual pass only if your driving justifies it. Both: settle who pays any tolls charged between handover and closure.

FASTag is one of several things that move with a car. The policy must be moved too, within 14 days; see our guide to used car insurance transfer. Run a challan check and an RC details check before you pay, so there are no surprises after the handover.
