Buying a Pre-2023 Used Car in Delhi NCR? What E20 Petrol Means for You

By Avinash DubeyPublished 7 min read

E20 is now the petrol you get at the pump. What it means for an older used car in Delhi NCR: mileage, wear, model-year checks and what to pay.

If you are shopping for a used petrol car in Delhi NCR this year, there is a question that did not exist when most of these cars were sold: how will it cope with E20? Petrol with 20% ethanol is now the standard fuel at the pump, and a large share of the cars on sale, especially used cars under ₹5 lakh, were built before carmakers switched to E20-ready parts. That does not make an older car a bad buy. It does mean the model year, the fuel system and the price deserve a closer look before you commit.

What E20 Petrol Actually Is

E20 is petrol blended with 20% ethanol. India moved from E10 to E20 to cut oil imports and emissions, and E20 is now what pumps dispense as regular petrol. Ethanol carries less energy per litre than petrol, which is why mileage is the first thing owners notice.

The other difference is chemical. Ethanol absorbs moisture and is harder on some older rubber and plastic parts in the fuel system. Cars designed for E20 use materials that tolerate it. Cars designed for E10 were not built with E20 in mind, even though they generally run on it without trouble.

Which Used Cars Are E20-Ready? Start With the Model Year

The simplest guide is the manufacturing date. The industry body SIAM has said E20-compliant vehicles with upgraded components have been on Indian roads since April 2023. Broadly, used petrol cars fall into three groups.

Built from April 2023 onwards: designed for E20. These need no special attention beyond your normal checks.

Built from about 2020 to early 2023: mostly designed for E10. They run on E20, but expect a small drop in mileage and keep an eye on fuel-system rubber parts as the car ages.

Built before 2020: the group to inspect most carefully. These cars have had more years for hoses and seals to age, and some owners report rougher idling or harder cold starts on E20.

Go by the manufacturing month on the RC, not the year in the listing title, because a car registered in 2023 may have been built in 2022. You can confirm the details with Hooter's RC details check before you visit. Many E20-ready cars carry an E20 label near the fuel filler, but do not read too much into a missing label. The owner's manual states the maximum ethanol blend the car was designed for.

How Much Mileage Will You Actually Lose?

Less than social media suggests, but not nothing. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has said that E10-designed vehicles calibrated for E20 may see fuel efficiency fall by 1 to 2 per cent, and other vehicles by 3 to 6 per cent. Your own result will depend on driving style, traffic and how well the car has been maintained.

Put a rupee figure on it. A hatchback that covers 12,000 km a year at 15 km/l uses about 800 litres of petrol. A 5% drop in efficiency adds roughly 40 litres, or about ₹4,000 a year at around ₹95 a litre. That is worth knowing, but it is rarely a reason to walk away from an otherwise good car.

What to Inspect on an Older Petrol Car

For a pre-2023 car, add a few fuel-system checks to your usual inspection. None of them needs special tools, and a good mechanic will do them in minutes.

Look under the bonnet for cracked, swollen or sticky fuel hoses, and sniff for petrol around the engine bay and under the car. Start the engine from cold if you can and listen for a rough or hunting idle. On the test drive, watch for hesitation when you press the accelerator, and make sure the check-engine light stays off. Ask whether the fuel pump, fuel filter or injectors have been replaced, and when.

The service file matters more than usual here. A car that has had its fuel filter changed on time and its injectors cleaned is a safer bet than one with no records. Our guide on why service history matters explains how to read it, and our Delhi inspection checklist covers the rest of the car.

If you hear knocking, see warning lights or notice heavy smoke, treat those as engine problems first and fuel problems second. Our list of engine warning signs in used cars helps you tell the difference.

Does E20 Change What You Should Pay?

For most cars, only slightly. The used market has not created a separate "E20 premium", and a well-kept 2021 car should not be marked down just because it was designed for E10. Where E20 does matter is in negotiating on older, poorly documented cars. If a pre-2020 car shows signs of fuel-system wear or needs new hoses or an injector service, get a quote and take it off the price.

Watch for the opposite pitch too. Some sellers now advertise a car as "E20-ready" as a selling point. Check the manufacturing date yourself, because the claim only counts if the car was built for it.

On a tight budget, older cars are where the value is. Browse used hatchbacks under ₹5 lakh and used cars under ₹8 lakh, then use the checks above to separate the good ones from the rest.

CNG, Diesel and Older Cars in Delhi

Many CNG cars start on petrol, so the same fuel-system checks apply to the petrol side. Diesel cars are not affected by E20 at all, but in Delhi they face a different clock: diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years cannot be driven in the city. Before you buy any older car, read our guide to Delhi's age rules for used cars so you know how many years of legal use are left.

A Quick E20 Checklist for Used Car Buyers

Confirm the manufacturing month on the RC. Check the owner's manual for the maximum ethanol blend. Inspect the fuel hoses and look for leaks or a petrol smell. Do a cold start and a test drive with a steady throttle. Ask for fuel filter, pump and injector service records. Use any wear you find to negotiate, and do not pay extra for an "E20-ready" claim you have not checked.

An older petrol car can still be a smart buy in Delhi NCR. When you are ready, compare inspected used cars in Delhi NCR and shortlist the ones with clean papers and a full service file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use E20 petrol in a car made before 2023?

Yes. Most older petrol cars run on E20. Cars designed for E10 may lose a little mileage, and their rubber fuel-system parts may need attention sooner as the car ages.

How do I know if a used car is E20-compatible?

Check the manufacturing month on the RC. Cars built from April 2023 onwards are designed for E20. The owner's manual also lists the maximum ethanol blend the car was built for.

How much mileage drop should I expect with E20?

The Petroleum Ministry puts it at 1 to 2 per cent for E10-designed cars calibrated for E20, and 3 to 6 per cent for other vehicles. Your result depends on how you drive and how the car has been maintained.

Should I avoid a pre-2020 petrol car because of E20?

Not automatically. Inspect the fuel system, check the service records and price in any repairs. A well-maintained older car can still be good value.

Does E20 affect diesel or CNG cars?

Diesel cars are not affected. Many CNG cars start on petrol, so the petrol-side checks still apply.
