Hyundai took the spotlight at the 2026 New York International Auto Show by introducing the Boulder Concept, a rugged look into the brand's future. This vehicle is more than just a showpiece; it introduces Hyundai’s first body-on-frame chassis. While this specific SUV might not hit showrooms, its heavy-duty foundation is set to power a new Hyundai pickup truck specifically for the American market by 2030.
A Tough Exterior Built for Adventure
The Boulder Concept showcases the "Art of Steel" design philosophy, featuring a boxy, muscular shape finished in a sleek Liquid Titanium paint. Its face is particularly unique, with a hood that looks armored and a grille featuring "H" patterns in Morse code. Practicality meets style with functional side steps, 18-inch wheels wrapped in thick all-terrain tires, and suicide-style doors that open wide for easy access. The rear is just as clever, boasting a double-hinged tailgate and a rear window that slides down to help carry long gear like surfboards or timber.

High-Tech Cabin and Smart Off-Roading
Inside, the Boulder balances a tough aesthetic with high-end tech. The cabin uses a beige-and-black color scheme and is built with durable materials designed to withstand heavy use. Drivers are treated to a massive head-up display that spans the entire windshield and a steering wheel equipped with rotary knobs to quickly switch driving modes. The center console is packed with four different screens to manage everything from music to complex trail navigation.
One of the standout features is a new software-driven guidance system. This digital "spotter" uses real-time data to help drivers navigate tricky terrain safely, making off-roading less intimidating for beginners.
Looking Toward 2030
While the Boulder serves as a "blank canvas" for future accessories, its main purpose is to test the waters for Hyundai’s upcoming truck lineup. Because American drivers have a strong preference for tough, frame-based vehicles, Hyundai plans to design and build these upcoming models directly in the U.S. Although this specific frame isn't confirmed for other global markets like India, the company did hint that a different, "muscular" SUV with off-road DNA is being developed for international fans by the end of the decade.
